Arsenal Miss Out on Women's Champions League Final

First Leg of Semi-Final in Germany: Wolfsburg 2-2 Arsenal

Pajor With Clinical Finish for First

May 1, 2023

Arsenal missed out on their first Women's Champions League final since 2007 after losing to Wolfsburg in the semi-final second leg on Thursday, May 4.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Germany, Arsenal needed at least a 1-0 victory in the return match at the Emirates Stadium to advance.

However, Wolfsburg took the lead in the 28th minute through Ewa Pajor's clinical finish. Arsenal equalized in the 89th minute through Lotte Wubben-Moys, but it was not enough to prevent Wolfsburg from winning 3-2 on aggregate.

The result means that Arsenal will have to wait at least another year for their first Women's Champions League title. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, will face Barcelona in the final on May 28.

The match was a major disappointment for Arsenal, who had been in good form coming into the game. They had won their last nine games in all competitions, including a 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

However, Wolfsburg proved to be too strong on the night. The German side were well-organized and clinical in front of goal. They also defended resolutely, making it difficult for Arsenal to create clear-cut chances.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall said that he was "disappointed" with the result, but he praised his players for their effort.

"We gave it our all, but it wasn't enough tonight," Eidevall said. "Wolfsburg are a very good team, and they deserved to win." Arsenal will now turn their attention to the FA Women's Super League, where they are currently second in the table, one point behind Chelsea. They will also be hoping to win the FA Cup, where they will face Manchester City in the final on May 14.
